02.05.25 Basic Mental Health Fundamentals Part 1 (Virtual)

In-home workers face many difficulties, including working with clients with mental health conditions. Mental Health Fundamentals explores five common mental health conditions and gives workers practical guidance on how to communicate with clients without getting caught up in their drama. Participants will learn about the connection between genetics, environments, and lifestyles in the development of a mental health condition; communication techniques to assist clients to replace maladaptive behaviors with positive ones; and skills to de-escalate clients experiencing a mental health crisis. Upon completion of this course participants will be able to understand how personal experiences impact relationships with clients experiencing mental health conditions, be able to identify the diagnostic criteria for five common mental health diagnoses, and able to recognize how adverse childhood experiences affect mental health.    

Intended Audience: Family Centered Services Staff (FCS); Recruitment/Retention Training Support Staff (RRTS); Qualified Residential Treatment Program Staff (QRTP)  Shelter Staff (Child Welfare Emergency Services) and Supervised Apartment Living Staff (SAL); Direct Care/Front-Line Staff and Supervisors

TRAINERS:
Billy Claywell- Billy W. Claywell, LMSW has been in the human service field since 1988. He has worked as an in-home service provider, foster/adoptive care caseworker, supervisor of a family preservation project, administrator of a family and children’s program, and grant writer. He is currently the Clinical Director for Corinthian House and provides clinical oversight and therapy for their residents. Billy has also trained on a variety of topics, including trauma informed care, client engagement, and mental health. His trainings include anecdotal experiences to support evidenced based practices He and his wife were foster parents for several years as well and his family is comprised of natural and adopted children. 

Registration will begin at 9:00AM. Training will begin promptly at 9:30AM. This training is scheduled until 11AM.

  4. Confidentiality: Respect the confidentiality of personal or sensitive information shared during the training.
  5. Inclusivity: Contribute to a welcoming, non-discriminatory environment. Respect diverse perspectives.
  6. Technology (For virtual sessions): Ensure you have a stable internet connection and appropriate technology. Keep your camera on and mute your microphone when not speaking.

 

Please note: Priority seating is provided to staff working within one of the current DHS child welfare service contracts, including: Family Centered Services (FCS); Qualified Residential Treatment Program (QRTP) / Group Foster Care; Child Welfare Emergency Services (CWES): Aftercare Services; Supervised Apartment Living (SAL); Recruitment, Retention, Training and Support Services (RRTS); Parent Partners; Foster Care Youth Council. If you do not work within one of the current DHS child welfare services contract, you may be bumped from the course and placed on a waitlist.
