Intersectionality of Child Maltreatment & Poverty (Virtual)

This course will identify the impact of poverty and the long-term effect on children and families. Often, poverty is confounded as a form of child abuse and neglect. Iowa specific poverty data will overlay with child maltreatment data to understand the impact of poverty on family safety and well-being.

TRAINERS:
Kylie Spies - Kylie Spies is the Outcomes and Advocacy Manager at Prevent Child Abuse Iowa in Des Moines. Kylie is a Licensed Master Social Worker who specializes in systems change advocacy through research and policy. She has a background in teaching, including K-12, Early Childhood, Adult Basic Education, ESL and Career Pathways. Kylie has experience working with former refugees and immigrants, incarcerated women, marginalized youth, and other special populations through program development, mentorship, evaluation, and transformational relationships. Kylie is also an adjunct instructor at Grandview University, where she educates social work students and organizational leaders on how the Social Determinants of Health and other structural factors impact the health and well-being of individuals in society and the workplace. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Drake University and a Master of Social Work from the University of Iowa.

Registration will begin at 8:30AM. Training will begin promptly at 9:00AM. This training is scheduled until 12PM.

Please note: Priority seating is provided to staff working within one of the current DHS child welfare service contracts, including: Family Centered Services (FCS); Qualified Residential Treatment Program (QRTP) / Group Foster Care; Child Welfare Emergency Services (CWES): Aftercare Services; Supervised Apartment Living (SAL); Recruitment, Retention, Training and Support Services (RRTS); Parent Partners; Foster Care Youth Council. If you do not work within one of the current DHS child welfare services contract, you may be bumped from the course and placed on a wait list.
